Introduction:

The fast food industry machine wheels are whining to a halt. With the widespread advocate of non-genetically altered foods people are quitting the fast food nation we are today, and instead bringing forth a fair food nation. During our special diet assignment most of us have argued for a diet that didn’t involve process food, and advocated lots of fruits and vegetables. Based on what Andy had said to us and taught us we have also argued for the treatments of over billions of cattle and steers. Cattle and steers raised in feedlots are treated to a poor life. The industrial food system is the system in which mass food production occurs. To understand it one must break it down; industrial (machines) and food system. What it means is a food system that is operated by machines. In many countries their food production is made easy with the use of machines. Although these machines cause a lot of problems, manure in meat, pesticides on vegetables, harm to workers and a lot more. The machines control the entire procedure. They are oppressors in society, because of all the problems that they cause and because they give people no alternative in food. Omnivore's Dilemma: It has significant insight into Industrial Agriculture supported by numerous facts. This book is good for finding quotes about this issue. Fast Food Nation: This is another book that talks allot about Industrial Agriculture. Written in a different way than Omnivore's Dilemma. "Daily Bread": Great footage depicting animals being raised and slaughtered. As well as, non-animal food products being grown; Shows patterns in the industry without using dialogue. Writing discussion preps: This allows us to further articulate our thoughts and observations pertaining to Industrial Agriculture. This was done with the books we read. The Meatrix: Sums up the essence of what we need to know in short clips. The animation can guide anyone along. Fast Food Experiences: This offers a first hand experience. We can see what happens after food is processed and at the end of the food industry chain.

Body 1:

Discussion preps activity is a way to hold students accountable for assigned readings from Omnivore’s Dilemma. Students are required to make a list of questions, comments, thoughts, and notable quotes. The second part of the assignment is to write two to three paragraphs about a particular point from the assigned reading. This activity is intended to prepare students to engage in an intelligent discussion about industrial agriculture.

“How we should eat” paper assignment required students to formulate a position in the form of an essay on how people should eat. Students address the health, accessibility, and ethical arguments of a particular diet. Students must also state whether the diet is a good way for people to eat or the right way for people to eat. Many accessibility and ethical arguments relate to industrial agriculture.

All foods are processed in different ways. Most foods however originate on a farm. Cows for example start out on a farm, where they are separated from their mothers at birth and their father is just a tube of seamen. Once they are old enough they are taken to a feedlot where they are fed 25 pounds of corn a day and a variety of antibiotics. Once they weigh about 1300 pounds and they are dying from all the acid eating away at their stomachs and livers… they are finally slaughtered. During their time at the feedlot they are living in their own shit and disease is ubiquitous. Of course machines are incorporated in this process. That is just a glimpse of the awful qualities possessed by the industrial food industry pattern of the industrial food system is disgusting. There is a way it all works, and it is all the same basic connection. When you go to a fast food restaurant (a giant benefited of the industrial food system) have you ever noticed them offer you something that you never asked for and throw in some sort of deal to get more money? This pattern exists all over corporations as well. I was at Barnes and Noble the other say and I went to buy a book. When I got to the cash register the woman asked me if I wanted to buy a membership and save 10 percent. I said no, but in my head I just wanted to be like “give me book and let me leave,” it’s all about money. That’s exactly what happened in that part in fast food nation the movie too, the desk clerk at the hotel was asking him what they could do so that he comes back and she was being all nice. Really though all she is doing is her job, she doesn’t actually give a shit if he comes back or how his stay was. She is a robot making him into another one.

Body 2:

The steers are fed up to 25 lbs of food per day and shit as much as 50 lbs of shit per day. In a feedlot with over thousands of cows the daily pile of shit is as high as Mount Kilimanjaro. Once killed the “products” blood and other wastes are than fed back to other steers. In hopes of saving money, however, this deed causes mad cow disease amongst humans and cows alike. The waste of the cows are also mixed into the product we eat from many companies such as McDonalds, Burger Kings, Subways and other fast food restaurants. We are eating shit People!!! Although it’s not that big of a change from what we usually eat. However, now we are finally getting sick from it, we are getting E. coli poisoning and are suffering heavily from it, all because the companies want to raise the productivity of their business. So the faster their illegal immigrants work the sicker we get.

Some companies however, are changing their ways. Take Burger Kings for example they now will only buy free ranged cattle to make their burgers. Yep, they are doing us a favor. However, it’s only 3% of their meat, yep, a whole huge chunk of the pies 3%. Wow that changes everything. But what about the torture the cattle are still going through. And this will definitely cause a huge dent in their financial portion of their company. That means either a higher cost burger or more worker related injuries. That means for every 3% of pure organic beef we could enjoy a little percentage of organic human meat. Mm…mmm…cannibalism.

There’s a story my master always tells us and warns us to never eat any fast food, based on this story. My grand master used to drive for Ryder’s trucks and delivered truck loads of McDonald’s products every week. One day he came back and in broken English he said.

“Kayo, Kayo don’t eat McDonald burger.” He said.

“Why?” my master asked.

He continues “McDonalds take whole cow…” gestures an entire cow. “Hair, shoe horn and bone…” imitates a grinder and meshes his hands together into a compressed form. “…McDonald burger!”

This story even though from the late 1960s tells us that even now the McDonalds Corporation still hasn’t changed their way of making their products. At least they didn’t lie to us; it is a “100% beef.”

My master also told us of an experiment using McDonald’s milkshakes. Regular milkshakes loses its thickness after 20 minutes. However, if you were to sit a Mickey D’s milkshake with a straw through it it’ll never lose its thickness it will sit there for hours after hours and after hours. This experiment proves that not only does McDonald’s milkshake not healthy but it also shows that McDonalds milkshakes ingredients are milk, sugar, ice-cream, and FAT. The fat gives it the thickness that it has and lets it stays in its form in any conditions for years depending on the business of the franchise.

Conclusion:

Not only is the industrial business in our world today uniformed, they are also cheap and lazy. They try their best to make money that they’ve forgotten why they started a business in the first place. In any small business the customer is always the number one priority however, in big corporations we, the customers are the last on their list. And we as people are as much to blame because we let them drag us in, we buy their products and eat their filth just because it’s faster, easier, and cheaper. We too are uniformed like the corporations, in order to stop the beast we have to stop feeding it.

Final Essay Question 1

Introduction:

Throughout this semester we looked at a human need for food. We looked at what we used to ship food from one farm to another and the methods we used to treat our animals such as pigs, cows and chickens. We went through the times where we saw food and animals as our help and as another being that lived alongside of us, to the today’s’ world where food is just a mean of fuel to keep us alive and fatten us. Based on our semester of work we can predict that in the near future food will continue to be more industrialized and we will rely more heavily on oil, until the peak oil theory puts this all to the end, where everything will crash and come to a halt.

Body Paragraph:

Before 1990, the Cuban oil crisis, Cuba like the United States economy flourished and relied heavily on oil fueled vehicles such as tractors, cars and trucks. The city infrastructure was similar to those of the United States, such as New York City. There were many vacant lots used to store cars, garbage and broken down appliances not wanted by anyone; most of the times these lots are infested with roaches, rats, and snakes. Similar to the United States, Cuba had thousands of pesticide factories and over 9,000 tractors that ran on oil. Other similarities were that the Cuban government did not foresee the shortage of oil that devastated their economy; in result they continued their lives as it was. Once they came to the realization that there was a shortage of oil it was already too late. In one year Cuban oil reservoirs stood at 14 - 13 million tons, in one year that number fell down to a mere 4 tons. Because of this the average Cuban citizen loss 20 lbs. by 1994, infancy mortality rate increased more than 10 percent, and the import and export of nova cane, tobacco, rice and citrus came to a stop. The Cuban lifestyle quickly changed and suffered for 4 years. Soon they turned to perma-culture, and gave food away in rations so everyone has food to eat. The empty lots were not used to gardens for fruits, and vegetables. In result the city of Havana had enough food to feed the population of Havana, which is 1million. In 6 long years the Cuban environment finally rebounded from their slump.

Conclusion:

Based on the parallels between the United States and the Cuban oil crisis, we can predict that Americans will go to a slump due to the shortage of oil. This will happen until we either stop or lessen our extravagant uses of oil, and develop perma – culture, and build gardens around our city vacant lots, and Detroit has a lot of vacant lots. By doing this we can localize food and shorten the oil used to transport food from point A to point B

Final Essay Question 2

Introduction:

Food is only one aspect of a linear nightmare in our culture. To most people in the modern era where our work is our lives food is used as a need to fuel our bodies so we could continue our work and become successful. Therefore, the true linear nightmare that we live isn’t because of food but the busy lifestyles that we live. By comparing our present life to life before agriculture and pesticides we can better improve our lives if we were to revert to a slower life style we maybe able to escape this nightmare that we call life.

Body Paragraph:

Everyday we wake up and work so the people around us can benefit such as family, we do this religiously and soon become bored and annoyed. Once these people are annoyed they end up going into deep depression and soon commit suicide. All because they didn’t like the lives they lived in. Before agriculture we, humans, were hunter and gatherers, we fought for our food and worked hard from it directly. Sure our lives were primitive and much shorter, but a hunter and gatherer never woke up one day bored. Unlike today human population was not at a bloom but was consistent every single time, this was because it takes each baby 4 years before they could leave their mothers and follow the other males. And there was a large enough surplus of food for everyone in the village. Only when we began to plow land to cultivate food did kings become kings and ate more and peasants became peasants and starved. Today there are many foods that we could benefit from such as mushrooms and nuts that naturally grow alongside the wilderness and we are unaware of this. In many 3rd world countries there are millions starving while we Americans have enough food to feed the majority of the worlds population.

Conclusion:

Because of the way we bring ourselves about is why there are millions suffering from this world. The industrial food system is what it is because we made it that way. We conquered the lands, mountains, the skies and even others. But in the end it is the world who will be the victor. In order to conquer the world we must live with the earth and the other species that inhabit it. Because it is already proven that the way we’re living will lead us to catastrophic consequences.

Article

i read the energy bulletin article. i chose this article because i believe the best evidence are indeed factual evidence, and statistics.
when reading this article i felt that most of the were useful in altering someones perspectives on certain topics. however, i still felt that it was a little off, and needed a little more "umph..." so i turned to the website and read some of the postings. the article and the site were very common in comparison. however, the site did give alot more insight that i needed in order to change my ideals. i admit in order to change ones mind there must be a balance of both factual and opinionated comments.
in the article i read about the green revolution. i felt that this was what started industrialized foods and other things. however, as i continued to read i soon realized it was similiar to andy's lectures but still, i benefited from this alot and now know more than before.

comments i posted

James comment-
your paper is a good start, but i feel that it needs a little more evidence to make it more concrete.

Joshua comment-
its a good start. you may want to add some qoutes about ethnics. and add a little evidence from the books. you could also have a little mini experiment with a cashier, try seeing if they actually says the same thing word for word to all of you.

What’s Go for People to Eat?

Introduction:

Keeping to a diet is hard for the average American; with all the responsibilities of kids, work friends, and other tasks that we have to do in order to maintain the luxurious life that we have. These lives that we live may lead us to hurry with our meals and forces us to grab a “quickie” whenever we need one. Our busy lives may lead to many things in our life, stress, high blood sugar, high cholesterol and any other health conditions that we as Americans may have. However, there is an alternative to eating while working and having take-out meals when we’re just too plain old too lazy cook. By eating less and eating right we could lead ourselves to a better health, but if we were to eat with pleasant company such as friends and family we could lead more to a stress free, and happier life that may alternately lead to a healthier life.

Major Arguments:

Health Arguments:

By having a meal with your family you will be given the chance to build a bond with you’re children and know what is bothering them or what their interests are and alternatively stop worrying that they will do something stupid in the near future. This could limit stress and depression in both the children and yourself. By eating with your friends and co-workers you could build a stronger bond with them or talk to people that you won’t normally talk to. This makes the occasionally “hello” an actual hello instead of a “get the hell out of my face”. By doing this you could build a stronger communal bond with a neighbor, friend or co-worker.

Accessibility Arguments:

You could have a meal with company anytime and anywhere. The company could be your friends, neighbor, co-worker, family members, and even people you just met. And you could be eating anything whether it’s fast food or Starbucks’ coffee. Cities are covered with restaurants and any town has at least a mall. The point of this is not how you eat but who are you eating with. As long as you’re having a conversation you might take a load off someone or have someone take a load of you.

Ethical Arguments:

By eating with someone or listening to him or her that person might not commit suicide in the near future or even fall into post-modern day depression. By accompanying someone for a meal and having a conversation with him or her you might make that person feel better not only about themselves but also about others. It is considered ethnical that we build relationships with others because if that person were to shoot anybody the next day because he feels that the world is unfair to him or her, you will be able to not only save this persons life but also save the lives of your co-workers, school mates, or even friends and families.

Conclusion:

It is always good for people to eat healthy and be aware of what they put into their mouths. One form of this is Vegans. Eating a strict diet of none animal products is always good for ones health and the daily recommended source of nutrition is always consumed with the vegan’s diet. However, eating right is only half of the plan to maintain a healthy life style. Even if you eat right one might still be in risk of depression, stress, frustration and have anxiety attacks every once in a while. No matter how you eat or what you eat no food or sort of diet can replace the company of your friends, family, and neighbors. With this company one might at the end or for that moment feel more comfortable about themselves.

Supermarket write-Up

before i went to the supermarket i didn't really think of if a certain food was healthy or not. i thought that if i eat a little bit of everything i could maintain healthiness. i ate from oiled filled omelets to dry fruity lettuces. and i also tried my best to train harder. my philosophy was that since i worked hard i should eat and play till i see fit.

once i got to the supermarket i looked at all the different groceries through te economical and nutritional lenses.
i asked if soda will help me?
how come the cans cost a few cents more than the 2 liter bottles?
why is there so many varieties of one type of cracker/ brand?
do the way they look affect their taste?
100 cal packs cost more but have less.
who/ what made and why is there lite butter popcorn?
why buy name brands when generic cost less?
is Thai brand noodles really thai food?
do i really need 25 plus grams of sugar?
why organic products help me develop and perform better inm y everyday activities?
will i be more energized by eating organic?
2 big bottles of beer costs less and have more than a six pack?
eventhough drinking is condemned why do we drink it?
why do flavored food cost more than regular flavors?

i kept asking myself if i needed this and its price and i also asked myself if this was needed in my diet. in this trip to the supermarket i now question what i eat even more and i ask myself why and how do i eat.

Fast Food

i walked into the McDonalds and stood there for about 15 minutes. one of the cashiers asked if i wanted anything and i just felt sick to my stomach. i waved my hand and said not yet. i looked at the little pond that was emptied and the table next to it. the table was empty but there was a napkin and a straw on it. i went up and ordered a soda with no ice. i walked up and sat down. as drank my soda i saw3 kids eating with their mother. they had french fries and burgers. i also saw some some other kids a few years younger than me sitting around eating and yelling, and laughing like i did. i finished my soda and than left.

Initial exploration of food teams Part 2

we can actually buy a chicken hen from any hatchery and start a 1.99 dollars a chick. we could buy one from:
  1. Leghorn chickens - Rockin' Rooster Ranchwww.rockinrooster.net Arizona
  2. www.mcmurrayhatchery.com Iowa

we could also buy them from a pet store, or buy one from a neighbor in the city. other ways of getting a chicken is by adopting one from an animal shelter, such as, chicken run rescue, and other adoption agencies.

some breeds that we could get are ones that could be in the cold weather or be really affectionate to us. however, any chicken that we could get is fine.

Saturday, February 10, 2007

Intial Exploration of food teams

Chicken:

  1. we can start right away. if we get baby chicks the chicken will become highly affectionate to us easily. however, we will still have to wait for it to grow in to a chicken hen. if we were to get a hen we would have to start to build a cope for the chicken. and we will be able to start instantly.
  2. we will first build a cope with a fence around it. then we will have to spend at least 10 minutes with the chicken and feed it regularly so it will be affectionate to us. we could than wait for the chicken to lay as many eggs as it wants to. however we must give it the space to roam around so we could have good eggs.
  3. we could raise chickens of almost any breed of chicken. however some breeds are actually harder to find such as the phoenix breed. my advice is that we should raise any breed of chicken that is actually available to us. however, i think we should go with the Brahma chicken. this breed of chickens are not that intelligent but easy to handle. however, if we want eggs right a way we could go with the Plymouth Rock chicken. they lay eggs year round with a slight decrease of production during the winter. however if we want chickens known for their meat and eggs the Dorking chicken could be the best way to go. it is the most common chicken we see on our dinner tables. however, it needs protection from the weather in the winter. but if we want chicks we could go with the rare Hamburg chicken. this chicken matures easily and are also known to be good egg producers but their eggs are rather small. or we could go with the Rhode Island Red chicken. this chicken are popular amongst Americans and are raised for their meat, eggs, or show.
  4. some issues are the cleanliest of the chicken and the roof garden. with the avian flu going around it will be a big risk to raise a potential candidate for the flu in captivity. other problems could be the weather and the schedule we have with vacations and weekends it will be hard to raise a chicken and give it the affection it deserves.

What would I eat?

for breakfast i would have congee with fried bread. and rice noodles. the next day i would have tea, and an assortment of appetizers with my family (Dim-Sum). the last day i would have bacon with a lot of eggs, maybe an omelet, pancakes, and some sausages.

for lunch i will have some soup noodles, sashimi, and other type of sushi. on the second day i will have a big gigantic sandwiches, some tuna, and some roast beef. the third day i will probably have rice with chicken and pork.

for dinner i will have steak and a bowl of white rice. the next day i will have some tomatoe with eggs and white rice, and the last day i will have a dinner with my family. it doesn't matter what i eat its only dinner.

generally people should just eat a little of everything. because that's what i eat a little of everything and i'm pretty healthy. alittle vegetables, a little meat, a little fish, and a little fruit.

Introduction to Locally Availiable Apple Cider

Apple cider are created by crushed apples that are left over from a previous day. Like apple juices it contains the nectar of the apples. however, unlike the juice it has no or very little added sugar so it still have the natural tarty-ness that an apple will have. the way these farmers make apple cider is by crushing a good amount of apples. this amount can contain many different type of apples from Macintosh to Granny Smith apples. in my opinion this gives it a good general apple taste. once ready the apple cider is then poured into a container and sold at the local market.

in this market the apple cider comes in a variety of different sizes such as, a pint, a quart, and a gallon. however in this case i brought a quart. in this quart there are 4 servings at Serving Size 8 fl oz (236mL). and the nutritious values are as followed:

Calories 120
Total Fat 0g 0%
Sodium 60mg 3%
Potassium 135mg 4%
Total Carbohydrate 30g 10%
Sugars 30g
Protein 0g

In another markets that sell similar items some of the apples used are organic. and others they don't add any sugar to it. however, in this market there are 30g of sugar added to the cider itself. probably gives it a sweetness and tastes vary much like apple juice. however the tarty flavor is still present.

apple cider is more nutritious than other beverages because it, though is in liquid form still have all the nutrients of an apple. while apple juices may have many added preservatives and food colorings that may put ones health at risk.

Apple cider is produced in any farm and all apple farms. however, in this case we used Caradonna Farms. The farm is in Caradonna Family, Marlboro, NY. The contact number is
845-236-3123. this was because it was the cheapest ones.

rice

when i put the rice into the pot i also placed twice the amount of water into the pot like andy said. i cooked the rice and watched it cooked. every single piece of the rice expanded. it seems like it absorbed the water in and expanded from the moisture. it seems like the seeds didn't pop like popcorn or moved or even cooked because it only got bigger from just sitting there. the rice soon plumped up and steamed like a hotdog. the hard shell became soft and fluffy gotten bigger. this seemed like the insides of the rice just broke out of the shell and we were eating the "meat" of the rice.

meal

as i scooped the eggs into my mouth i could hear the crunch of the onions in the mix. i pushed it back and forth in m y mouth and moved it towards my mullers where i smashed it into bits and pieces. as i swallow the juiceless musch i could taste the spicy natural flavors of the onions this was a shock to my tastebuds. i swallowed the onion and felt the same spice travel down my throat and feel the tingling sensation as my throat feels as if it was on fire.
needing it i drank a bit of water and felt the cool breeze of releif rush through my mouth and down my throat. i felt as if a dam broke through and made its way into my mouth. i felt that my mouth said thanks to me for they felt cleaner and breezier. the cleaning sensation to me felt as if was sking down a mountain where the wind rushes into my mouth and the smell of pine trees sore pass me.as the water gush into my troat my throat also says thanks to me for supplying them with water to quench the fire that was burning my troat.
once done i took another bite of the eggs this time both the ham and egg made its way to my mouth. as if it was in a rubber room the two bounced and bounced about and cheer as i toss them around my mouth. i push the salty combination about the mullers of my mouth and drain it of its juices as i squeesh the dinner into little tiny particles that even man is not able to see. i then swallow the pummeled remains of my dinner.
next i ate the peas that was drenched in the saltyness of the ham. the salt covered pea fit perfectly in my mouth as i squeesed it with my mullers i could taste the juices that poured out of the pea. balancing the salty flavor from before, my mouth rejoiced as if it was freed from the prison of salt that it suffered before. as i swallowed the skin of the peas it bounced about my troat and exacts revenge on me for eating it. however, the revenge was not successful as i swallowed it even faster.
as i put the rice in my mouth i felt that i was eating airs and the clouds that roam the skies. the tasteless rice than made its way to the two ends of my mouth and was crushed and pummeled till a little rice cake like shape was formed. the rice soon made its way to my troat where i digested it calmly and freely.

My meal

This is one of my meals. I had the staples to a Chinese meal, white rice, Chinese vegetables, roast pork ribs, and chicken wings.

The white rice like any white rice you have eaten tastes basically the same. However the way I prepare it is that I put a little more water in the pot. This makes the rice a lot fluffier and moist. I like eating rice that is like this because with the added water the rice temperature is much higher than dry rice and has a certain touch to it. When placed in the mouth it not only warms me up but gives me a little sensation to it. It’s almost like a certain foreign ingredient is added to it that gives it this kick. Maybe it’s the taste of the past meals left in the pot or the metal in the pot that gives it this extra kick.

The vegetables, like I said before is a staple to the Chinese meal. No matter what day it is or what meal it is a meal isn’t complete without a healthy portion of steam vegetables. The way these vegetables are prepared is that we boil it in a pot with water salt and a little of oil. This brings out the natural flavors of the vegetables, lets it cook quicker, than and as well as gives it a little taste. When boiling you could stop it when ever you want to the ideal time for it is about 5 to 10 minutes. However this was topped at 2 minutes. This gives it a nice crunchy taste. We then pour out the water and drain the vegetables. We stopped it prematurely because we don’t want to over cook it in the wok. This was stir fried with a little of oil and oyster sauce. This gives it a bit more flavor. When eating this at first I tasted a little blandest from the vegetables. This is the vegetables natural taste. Then later on it started to taste the ingredients mixed in the oyster sauce gave it a sweet taste that made it delight able.

The fried chicken wings, even though is not a staple, it is a special dish that my father made. It is mixed in a secret batter that he uses to make it taste different from other restaurants, and stands out from the other chefs. Once mixed properly the wings are put in to the fryer where it should fry for 15 minutes or until it floats up. By floating up this means that the batter, skin and a small portion of meat have been fried so much that it is mostly air. Upon tasting it the wings have a crunchy felling to it that made me happy. Whenever I eat something crunchy it makes me happy whether its meat or vegetable. It first has a cinnamon no wait pepper no way garlic. It’s a weird taste that makes it seem mysterious. Even if you could taste the ingredient you can’t pin point which is which and what is what till now I still can’t tell what it is with just tasting.

The next is roast pork this isn’t the like the barbequed kind. This is cooked all at once and is cooked in a different way. It’s first cut open then the skin is roasted this makes it so the heat reaches the inside as well as the out side. Like fried food the pork is cooked until the skin is crisped. The taste of it is bland and really has the taste of meat. It’s probably seasoned but I don’t know with what. It is usually dipped in hoisen sauce where it takes in a sweet taste. It is also accompanied with a light sour taste but it’s like the taste isn’t really there.
